History of Nine Arch Bridge
Colonial Era Construction
The Nine Arch Bridge was built during the British colonial period, around 1921, as part of the expansion of Sri Lanka’s railway network connecting the hill country. This railway line played an important role in transporting tea from plantations to Colombo.
The Steel Shortage Story
According to local legends, construction began using steel. However, during World War I, steel became scarce and was redirected for military use. As a result, the bridge was completed using stone bricks and cement, without any steel reinforcement.
Local Engineering Contribution
The bridge is believed to have been constructed with the help of local craftsmen and engineers, showcasing traditional building techniques combined with colonial design.
